Trapped

Analysis and Ideologies of Richard Boulanger's Trapped In Convert.

  SASP. 2013
Trapped In Convert by Richard Boulanger is one of the first classic computer music  compositions written that grabs the imagination and speaks volumes to the listener  through its colorful, dynamic, simple and complex soundscapes. For over 30 years  Trapped has been played, studied and exemplified as the quintessential music  synthesis composition known for the longevity and timelessness of Boulanger's  orchestra, score and instrument opcodes (having first used Barry Vercoe's music11 in  1979 and then later in 1986, his Csound signal processing programs).

Introduction

Trapped In Convert is the first electroacoustic piece that I heard (in 1993) that was made solely with computer and that for me was approachable art because it is a composition that has phrases, rhythm, continuity, happy sounds and even melancholy, and yet every instrument could sing by itself as in a miniature vignette. For these reasons I de-composed the code, section by section, instrument by instrument, so that I could compile the code to hear anything that my curiosity asked for.

The purpose of presenting this analysis of Trapped In Convert in the methodical way it is presented here is for composers of computer music, student or otherwise, to see a way (if not the way) that in order for us to make comments about a composition, we should learn all that we are interested in (and even more) about that composition. And, this ultimately will serve to improve our own composition writings.

Introduction

Il Cortile Dei Miracoli. The Courtyard of Miracles draws from Sofia's past childhood. He seeks to create the courtyard / playground experiences through the eyes of a child when fantasy, miracles, is more the promising reality inspiring children to play with abandon, shaping dreams that may one day be reality, fashioning future adult personalities to deal with the world and society.

Turenas

 John Chowning's Turenas: An Analysis.

 SASP. 2001-02
Discusses Turenas for its programmed musicality through digital FM synthesis and  spatialization techniques, and because it is representative of the natural attributes of  the quality of sounds and how sonorously they can be represented by computer  generated music.

Introduction

John Chowning is one of the pioneers of computer synthesis generated music especially known for his discovery of the frequency modulation (FM) algorithm and his continuing development of the FM synthesis technique, a corner stone in contemporary computer music research and composition.

For the purpose of this paper I have chosen to discuss Chownings Turenas for its programmed musicality through digital FM synthesis and spatialization techniques, and (as the title is an anagram of the word natures) because it is representative of the natural attributes of the quality of sounds and how sonorously they can be represented by computer generated music.

Richard Karpen's Life Study #5: An Analysis.

 SASP. 2001-02
Chosen for its genre which can be described as cinematic technique, the paper  researches and analyzes Karpen's computer applications for music compositions and  sound design through specialized signal process techniques which he developed and  used to create his Life Study #5.

Introduction

Richard Karpen is one of the leading international composer in Digital Computer Music for both his pioneering compositions and his work in developing computer applications for music composition and sound design.

For the purpose of this paper I have chosen to discuss Karpens Life Study #5 the last one of its series for its genre which can be described as cinematic technique. Also the composition represents some special signal process techniques which Karpen developed and used to create his Life Study #5.

Risset

 Jean-Claude Risset's Sud: An Analysis.

 SASP. 2001-02
Discusses and analyzes Risset's Sud for its pictorial soundscape properties and the  techniques Risset used to create his metaphor of the sea by his use of music  applications on the imitation of instruments with synthetic sounds. Uses compositional  analytical approach with time line graphs complete with new findings.

Introduction

Risset is a dedicated pioneer in the computer music field, known for his development of music applications on the imitation of instruments through synthetic sounds, he has contributed greatly to the musicality of computer generated music.

For the purpose of this paper I have chosen to discuss Rissets Sud for its pictorial soundscape properties and the techniques Risset used to create his metaphor of the sea in the south of France.

Introduction

Poéme Électronique is an electronic music composition (written when Varése was seventy five years of age) and represents the culmination of his lifes quest for different sonorities, instrumentation and effects in music composition.

For these reasons, together with the extraordinary circumstances in which Poéme was performed it was installation art by architecture and sound design, and it synchronizes music to graphic visuals to create a multimedia artistic whole, all realized through mathematical and scientific methods was a prolific topic to analyze and discuss.
